Canvas Colored Paintings

Underneath the grid drawn with pencil on the paintings, is the weave of the canvas. The weave is also a “grid” composed of horizontal and vertical lines. Both the color of the canvas, and the weave of the canvas, are starting points for the paintings. Gottfried Semper theorized that architecture originated in weaving, first with the making of fences and enclosures by weaving (braiding and knotting together branches) and then later with the making of walls from plaited wicker.
